What I Haven’t Done – Sunday Confessional March 21, 2010

If you’re new to Home Ec -I know there are some new lurkers about, ’cause I’m a creepy stat watcher- sometimes on Sundays we have the Sunday confessional. It’s something I came up with a couple years ago to try to keep things honest. It’s all too easy when running a site like this to only focus on the parts of life that we want others to see. It’s not a celebration of mediocrity, rather it’s just an acknowledgement that life isn’t always like the glossy magazines or home inspiration shows. In real life we don’t have a set crew and designers to follow behind and make everything right.

The current truth is, I’ve been really scattered lately and I haven’t been following my own advice. You see that yellow sticky right up there? That’s the cleaning schedule I’ve used for a very long time and it works.

When I do it.

Yeah. That.

Yesterday I spent a healthy portion of an all-too-gorgeous Saturday playing catch up, so hopefully when Monday rolls around, I don’t start off feeling behind.

I don’t even want to talk about how off-track I’ve gotten with diet and exercise. Some of it I have a legitimate reason, the rest has been allowing stress to have its way with me.

Another deadline with the book is on the horizon and I’ve got to get things prepped to roll on auto-pilot.

This reminds me, I’m going to revamp Fearless Fridays to be a once-a-month carnival. It’ll take place on the first Friday of each month, this means instead of a week, you have an entire month to try a new technique, ingredient, or recipe in the kitchen. Sounds reasonable, right? I’ll post more details later this week.

I think, unless there’s a public outcry that I will do away with the Menu Mondays here. I may instead put them on my personal site or I could post a menu / shopping list with recipes already in the index, if that is something readers would be interested in.

I think that’s everything I had to get off my chest. What about you? How have you really been doing?

    I like the Menu Mondays! I have a hard time selecting sides to go with entrees, so it really helps with that! But it would be nice if all of the items listed had recipe links for them…

      The recipe selection is always expanding, but not everything I try every week makes the cut. I can't stand a rut when it comes to dinner, so sometimes I have intentions of going back and making something again, but never get around to it. If I do the menu + shopping list version, that would have every recipe included.

    I went on a cleaning rampage over the weekend. I got both bathrooms spotless, the livingroom and kitchen presentable, though not really clean. I didn't go to church Sunday like I should have .I've been using my boys being sick as an excuse to not go. I haven't been lying, but I haven't been to church at all during Lent.

    Confession? Just one? O gosh…hmmm. Let's pinpoint the important one.
    My house is a disaster. And I don't mean "O it's dirty, you don't want people to judge…let's do a hurry clean and it will be presentable for visitors." I mean it's a "OMG, this is horribly disgusting."
    I will explain, and hopefully this doesn't come across as I am trying to put up excuses.
    My husband is Bi-Polar. He takes a god awful amount of meds. Some days he is good, some days horrible. Recently he overflowed the toilet with paper towels. Apparently he had a accident, wanted to clean it up, and forgot that paper towels do not go down a toilet. So I had a mess. Literally a huge huge mess. Thankfully it was in the downstairs bathroom, and when it overflowed it was downstairs. Where I had tile. I tried my best to clean it up, did quite well. Then he spilled food, and soda, and other stuff…and then the dog sheds like crazy. Huge amounts…and I live in Arizona, so the dust is horrible…. You get my drift. I just walk in the front door, past it all, upstairs, and crawl into bed. I have been so depressed. And I have been so sick. Half the problem is my house. So I have tackled one thing at a time. First thing was the kitchen, I decluttered a little too… And I am quite proud of myself.
    But I have been so down about it all. So I understand how you have been feeling.

    I'm in the throes of starting a new business, hopefully to replace a career I have come to intensely hate and lately has ceased to pay the bills, so between working 25-40 hours a week at my day job and every other waking moment at my new business, I just don't have time to do much housework. I am trying to get my husband, who is retired, to pick up some of the slack, but things are starting to get ugly, particularly now that it is spring and the dogs are shedding their winter coats, and he cannot "remember" to run the vacuum. I need a weekly maid, but just can't afford it. I'm going to have to be satisfied with "it's not a health hazard yet." :o(

    We're moving in 8 weeks, so the de-cluttering needs to be going faster than it is. I've gotten a fair amount done, but there's too much of the "I can get to that later" going on around here! We're downsizing from a 4 bedroom house with basement and garage to a condo (no basement; no garage) so I'm trying to figure out what we can store and where ……. as in, where do we store the christmas decorations? the fly fishing equipment? the picnic basket? Or will they end up at the thrift store along with everything else?
    And, of course, I need to be at the new place (450 miles away) to get the carpet ripped out, new flooring installed, and all 7 rooms … all at the same time!
    At least I got the garage decluttered and swept today ….. the weather was gorgeous and it was fun to be out in the fresh air.

    I'm ready for the kids to go back to school after a week of Spring Break. My husband took the week off, too. Ready to have MY routine back. Come Tuesday morning (when they are all back where they should be….minus the two pre-schoolers) I plan on cleaning this house up one side and down the other. THEN things will be as they should and my life as mom can be succesful and fruitful once again. (probably)

    I haven't done any exercise or been following my diet. Work I'm caught up on, personal life continues to be couch potato-ish.

    My confession is that I have wasted the last five days (beautiful, sunny days!) when I could have been working on the three research projects due inside the next three weeks and/or the three tests I have next week. I keep thinking I have much more time than I do and I have to simply buckle down and do it. Or at least *start*. Studying or researching, one or the other.

    I shouldn't say "wasted" per se. I did a lot of cycling in the beautiful sun, and losing this weight is both good for me and professionally necessary. But still. I have a lot of school work that needs doing and I am totally slacking.

    I feel like a complete waste of a human being today! There's so much that needs to be done – laundry, cleaning out the fridge, pulling weeds…and yet here I am, typing this in my pajamas (still) and watching Goodfellas. Sigh.

    I have to say, it's nice to know that there are other people who go through the same stuff I do!

    I'm pregnant and due in July so I use that as an excuse if I don't get much done in a day. Every day is productive because every day I'm working on making a human. 🙂
    But who are we kidding? I have no energy and a toddler running around helping to undo everything I've done. I try to follow your cleaning schedule as well. I haven't fully done it since November. That was when the morning sickness set in. Maybe once this baby is born and I've had a few weeks to settle in everything will get back on track. So, September….
    For the next few months I've just given myself permission to not have it all together. And I tell people to ignore the mess of my house or don't come over. But my plan for after the baby comes is to post your cleaning schedule on my fridge so that when all my friends want to be helpful, but aren't sure what to do, I can just point.

      Post that schedule now so friends can start helping you now! We mommas know how hard pregnancy can be and usually want to help even before the baby is born.

    It's been a great week….albeit hard…as we prepare for Les to leave for the Middle East again….my schedule and clients had to be reduced to prepare to be the single parent again….lots of additional work to be able to safely and without stress transition projects to either complete, or to train someone else to do some of my load…. (you know the drill, it had to get worse to get better, kinda like deep cleaning!)
