Free For All Friday and a Random Brag

Heather says:

Did you know it has been nearly four years since I launched Home Ec 101 with Ivy? Crazy, I know. Tuesday night I was quite surprised to find that I had been included in the 40 Bloggers to Watch in 2011 list over on the ProBlogger site. The post itself was written by Jade Craven and it’s a very meta kind of achievment -meta simply means that it’s probably only important to those of us who pay attention to what happens in the blogging world- but it was still a huge ego stroke, nonetheless. I had to share it with you.

Today is one of those odd little fake holiday days. Chris Cactus of Rude Cactus came up with Delurking Day. What does that mean? Well, a lurker is a reader of a site who never or only rarely comments. You see, comments actually mean a lot to bloggers. It’s a sort of validation, it shows that the daily effort is noticed. So just for today, step forward and say hi. If you want, tell us a little about yourself. Yes, I’m looking at you. It’s time to come out of hiding and say hello. Don’t worry, it’s not a long-term committed relationship, you can go right back into the shadows. It was nice to see you, however briefly.

All of you regulars who do leave feedback? Thank you, you really do make getting up and making the effort worth it.

What have you been up to lately? Have you made any progress on your goals for 2011?

I don’t do memes often, but I thought this one might be fun. . . hat tip to Sarah who let me know about the event.

I'm late. As usual. 🙂 I've been lurking lately, but only because my youngest doesn't give me time to do anything besides read snippets anymore. Some days I really enjoy going to work.

    Hi! Love your blog…

  3. Amy at CreativeSpace on January 15, 2011 at 11:40 pm

I had to laugh about the de-lurking, and I totally sympathize. As a blogger you look at your stats and can see the hard evidence that it's not just your mother reading your daily musings. But until you see those comments (besides your mother's two cents) in the little box below, the numbers don't feel real.

Hi, I subscribe so I didn't get your update till Saturday.Hope it still counts! I do 'lurk" but I enjoy your bog and have learned a lot from you. Thank-you for your hard work. Linda

I enjoy reading your blog. I clean houses for a living(13houses). It is nice to see how other folks do things. My family recently had water damage to our home and it has been a hectic time getting the house repaired. I would urge all your readers to check the hoses on their washing machines cause a burst hose can be a disaster!

  6. ThatBobbieGirl on January 15, 2011 at 5:53 pm

I'm not a lurker but I sometimes play one on TV. And by TV, I mean the internet. 😉

You know that I know that you know I comment (a lot, sometimes) but I wanted you to know that I read every post. Ya know?

Cheering you on from the sidelines,

My recent post NotoriousTBG- Gee- thanks- Migraine- for that unexpected break from accomplishing anything I needed that SO not at all Dont let the screen door hit ya

Hello! I'm also delurking a day late. Happy January! Thanks for everything you write. 🙂

Hi! I'm delurking a day late to say thanks for your site!

You know that I'm always here 😉

    SO SOON! 😉

  10. Pamela on January 15, 2011 at 10:26 am

Another delurker here, I agree with Hilde, I rarely think that I have anything to contribute. I've been reading you for about a year and I always appreciate your sensible advice and your attitude towards the world. Hi to Brian, too.

  12. Mrs_eg on January 15, 2011 at 7:28 am

Sorry, I always lurk! Have nothing to say really, love the site – keep up the great work!

  13. Hilde on January 15, 2011 at 2:11 am

I rarely comment because I think I don´t have anything valuable to add! But I read your blog every day, and I´ll try to at least say Hi more often.

  14. Susan on January 14, 2011 at 11:45 pm

Another lurker emerging from the shadows. Love to read but am lazy about commenting! Thank you for all you do!

  15. Christine on January 14, 2011 at 11:11 pm

I have read your blog almost every day for the last two years and I never comment. Maybe now I will start. 🙂 Your site makes me feel like good should be the goal and perfection should not be. I really really enjoy it. When I feel overwhelmed it gives me a place to start, either with your chore list or with your archive cleaning tips or your menus. Thank you for your hard work.

    • HeatherSolos on January 15, 2011 at 10:33 am

I couldn't respond via email, but I wanted you to know that I do appreciate your kind words. I'm often guilty of lurking on other sites, myself. 🙂 Yeah, I'm a hypocrite, but I'm glad you find Home Ec 101 useful.

  16. Melissa on January 14, 2011 at 9:06 pm

I'm not good about commenting either, but I love reading 🙂

I kinda "met" you earlier this week, but I'll delurk here as well. I read you religiously in Google Reader so rarely comment, but your tips do come in mighty handy. I search the archives regularly as well.

  19. @JayMonster on January 14, 2011 at 3:03 pm

I hope by now you know I am a regular reader, but unfortunately (for me… probably better for you) commenter. Unfortunately this has only gotten worse since I have been doing my reading via my phone in my mom's hospital room, but my lack of comments should not reflect on how much I adore you and Home Ec 101, glad to see Pro Blogger and others are catching on to what I have known for quite some time.(proof… I called this as a blog to read… May 9th, 2007

Hi! Just found your site last night & I had to come back today! Love your site!! I live in Upstate, SC & I am a total lurker!!

  21. Meredith on January 14, 2011 at 3:06 pm

I'm a consistent lurker too, but a regular reader. I can't give my excuse for the previous 14 months, but for the last 2 I have always had an infant sleeping on one of my arms which makes typing difficult. But thank you so much for all you guys do!

  22. Keter on January 14, 2011 at 2:52 pm

I'm probably the polar opposite of a lurker, whatever that is. ;o) Congratulations, Heather, you deserve the attention.

  23. Jenny on January 14, 2011 at 2:51 pm

I'm a serial lurker – on blogs – on facebook- you name it. I also don't have a comma key on my laptop thanks to my 3 yr old. Actually I have to check everyday to see what my chores for the day are. You would think that I would have managed to remember it after the first week or 2

    • HeatherSolos on January 15, 2011 at 10:55 am

Ok parents, say it with me. Since we have kids we "Just can't have nice things."
I feel your pain. I'm in that holding pattern where there are things I want to fix / and or replace but I'm going to wait just one or two years, until the probability of it being immediately destroyed lessens a little bit.
Thank you for taking the time to comment. 🙂

  24. Rebecca on January 14, 2011 at 2:49 pm

    {/delurk} Hello! Love your blog, and I read not only the daily stuff, but I often use the cleaning tips in your archive when I have something weird and unusual that I have to tackle. 🙂 {/lurk}

  25. Steven Berry on January 14, 2011 at 1:02 pm

i always comment. ok not always. i lurk alot.

I found your blog when I did a web search on HOME EC. I was a home ec, major in college and loved it. So I wanted to read what you were doing. I now subscribe.

Happy Delurking Day! I am content to just lurk, but I really enjoy your content, and have used several of the recipes you have posted, including the Nutella No-Bake Chocolate Oatmeal cookies. They were a big hit in my family! Nutella is now a staple in my house!

  29. Sue H on January 14, 2011 at 12:43 pm

Hi from a lurker. I think I did post once but mostly just enjoy reading the info! Thanks and keep it up!

Hi! I read my daily blogs through Google Reader so I don't usually comment on anything. I appreciate all the info you've shared, and look forward to reading when I see a new post pop up. I really enjoy the menu-related posts, as they've helped me figure out how to plan weekly menus for my family.

My main goal for 2011 is "use it up" and I've been doing pretty good with it (mostly out of necessity, lol).

    *recloak* 😉

Happy Friday! I mostly lurk, but I am a regular reader, and love your tips. I appreciate how methodical you are about homekeeping, as I am single and haphazard about it. Thanks for doing it, it's an inspiration for me!

  35. Sarah on January 14, 2011 at 12:05 pm

Delurking…thanks for your blog! I have flagged several recipes to try.

Hello! I generally do lurk. Thanks for such a niftykeen blog 🙂

  37. Melinda on January 14, 2011 at 11:47 am

I guess I'm one of those that rarely comments. I love your blog. I have learned so much from reading. Thank you for all of your hard work..

Let's see, a little bit about me. Mom of 2 girls. Homemaker, Homeschool teacher, a little bit OCD (but only a little bit), quilter, crafter, avid reader. What else do you want to know? 😉

  38. Cecilia on January 14, 2011 at 11:13 am

Me too…delurking that is. Just want to say that I enjoy your blog and appreciate all your hard work.

  39. Jesica on January 14, 2011 at 11:13 am

Also delurking! I'm not good at commenting on the blogs I read, but I do enjoy this one! Thanks for sharing your wisdom with us 🙂 And as for 2011 goals? It's been a bit of a battle of wills with myself (meaning, my willpower is seriously failing me). I'll keep trying 🙂

  40. besnini on January 14, 2011 at 11:05 am

I'm delurking 🙂 I think I have commented 3(?) times in the couple years I've been reading. I love reading your posts. Thank you for doing this blog, though I don't comment often, I do appreciate you!
