My tip: If you want to do something for a 2nd or 3rd time mom, throw a POKER TOURNEY shower. Make the “buy in” a package of diapers, serve casual food and the big winner will get a really nice gift certificate to a good restaurant or movie theatre, etc. This is a fun way to get all the friends together and give the new family some essentials when they already have the cribs, bouncers, clothing left over from the previous babies!

I’d like some cake, please! 🙂

I have a good friend that is expecting soon – I’d love to be able to do something nice like this for them. Please add me to the giveaway drawing!

  6. Heather on October 9, 2008 at 9:21 pm

I don’t yet have much experience at baby showers, but I had a record number of friends and family get married this year so I’m thinking there will be a few babies due in 2009. These “cakes” are adorable and creative, and even if I don’t win I’ll try my hand at putting one (or two or three) together. Thanks!

  7. Charlotte on October 8, 2008 at 7:41 am

Make your baby shower kid friendly! They love the silly games and fun eats.

  8. Celene on October 7, 2008 at 1:55 pm

I have made several of these and they are indeed adorable and fun. These are very nice ones. Love the little one with the shoes! Please enter me. I am going to add this to my blog. Thanks for entering my jewelry give away at Wood n’ Whimsy! Good luck and God Bless! Celene

    Becca Rocks!

  10. the holly on October 7, 2008 at 10:57 am

my fav is probably baby gift bingo – especially if its a couples shower. 🙂 just too funny.

  11. thecoolmom on October 7, 2008 at 9:55 am

This may seem like a no-brainer, but I see it violated frequently. If the mom is not a first-timer, find out what she likes, not what you like. After the first baby, many mom have found a type of diapers they like, figured out what stuff they used the most, what kind of pacifiers they like, etc. I’ve seen moms who breastfeed loaded up with bottles and formula and ones who cloth diaper weighed down with cases of disposable diapers. If you’re not sure, ask.

The diaper cakes are beautiful. I’m due in January and that would be a lovely gift.

  12. Amy A on October 7, 2008 at 9:29 am

One thing that was meaningful at my baby shower was to have guests say blessings for the baby. Also, at a shower where the mom had not decided on a name, we all wrote a suggestion on a page cut to look like a boy’s onesie. It can later be put in a scrapbook.

  13. Molly on October 7, 2008 at 1:06 am

Oh please let me win. I have three pregnant friends right now and this would be the best present for one of them. Oh they are so gosh darn cute!

Unfortunately, I don’t have any good tips or funny stories because I need them to have the babies first to either learn something (maybe just what not to do), or one of them needs to have a shower soon 🙂

  14. Jennifer on October 7, 2008 at 12:47 am

Can you think of a better gift for a friend who is being given a baby shower in hopes of adopting a little boy? I see my friend Beth had the same idea. I’m posting in order to enter the contest and hopefully win this diaper cake for the same couple she posted for, doesn’t that count doubly?

  15. Rhonda Martin on October 6, 2008 at 7:15 pm

The only funny story that comes to mind is during the baby boom when I attended a baby shower and half the guest were pregnant too~! It looked like we were at the maternity ward Their was so many pregnant women there. I was waiting for someone to go into labor and us having to rush one of them to the hospital lol This Diaper Cake is so Cute & Adorable I would love to win it for my daughter in laws baby shower since she is due in December. Thanks for having this adorable giveaway.

  16. silver on October 6, 2008 at 6:53 pm

My advice would be to make sure the food served isn’t heavy. Pregnant women often can’t eat large heavy meals by the end of their pregnancies!

I also think the “give advice or words of encouragement to the mom” thing is nice. Everyone writes down advice or encouragement on a note card and they’re given to the mom-to-be.

  17. Dorothy on October 6, 2008 at 3:16 pm

Hmmmm… well I’ve only been to one baby shower, as most of my friends are holding off on the baby front until we’re married, but I made a quilt for the new baby, and the mom-to-be loved it (even though it wasn’t quite finished.) I guess my tip would be to actually finish making the gift you’re giving before you give it…. so you don’t have to take it back to finish!

  18. Sara on October 5, 2008 at 10:37 pm

My friend is having a baby in February! She just graduated from college and moved to Portland from Illinois with her hubby. This would be a wonderful gift for her!

  19. Kerry on October 5, 2008 at 9:30 pm

I would love to win this. I always love the baby shower game where everyone takes the amount of toilet paper off of a role that they think will fit around the mom’s belly.

  20. Libby on October 5, 2008 at 7:32 pm

Thanks for the chance to win this incredible diaper cake! All of my friends are busy growing their families right now, so this would definitely come in handy!

And with all of these showers going on, I’ve got a couple of games that are always crowd pleasers.

My favorite shower game is called “Purse Scavenger Hunt.” You break the guests up into teams and give them a list of items to find in their purses (lipstick, cash, party invitation, etc). Each item found is worth a set number of points and the team with the most points wins. Of course, you have to put some “stumpers” in there (like uneaten food, tools, clothing, etc.) to keep things interesting. This is a great game to play if all of the guests don’t know each other very well.

Also, baby bingo is a lot of fun. Right before the mom-to-be opens her gifts, hand out blank bingo cards and have guests fill them in with gifts they think the new mommy will receive (being sure to put their own gift in the squares too). As the guest of honor opens her gifts, guests check off their squares and the first one with bingo wins.

  21. Elizabeth M. on October 5, 2008 at 6:34 pm

We’ve played identify the baby food games a couple of ways, both by tasting it and by removing the labels and guessing by sight. That’s fun too.

  22. Victoria on October 5, 2008 at 6:01 pm

Baby showers are so much fun! I think one tip is to play games. It helps break the ice and everyone enjoys them even if they are cheesey!

  23. Paige on October 5, 2008 at 5:20 pm

I’m actually hosting a baby shower for my sweet cousin next month! This would be such a great gift! We like to play the “candy bar poop” game, where you smoosh a candy bar in the diaper and have to guess by the smell which candy bar it is.

  24. Alli C. on October 5, 2008 at 5:20 pm

My fave tip is to have all of your guests come prepared to share at least 1 way to sooth a crying baby, a stressed dad, or a super tired mom. They can write them on notecards, in the cards, or the tip can be part of a gift. For ex., soothing a tired baby, the gift could be a pacifer or a blanket.

  25. Lindsey on October 5, 2008 at 2:43 pm

I am not a huge baby shower fan – but I love the baby shower open houses! It is fun to come and go as you please and still get to visit and see friends. It is also great when the little ones come out!

  26. Christina on October 5, 2008 at 1:43 pm

How cute are these!! As somewhat of a baby shower expert ( I have had 6 of my own) having guys at your baby shower is a MUST! I know that traditionally men are forbidden from baby showers but having them their really livens up the party! There is nothing better than seeing a man playing Baby Bingo or playing ” Who can drink the bottle fastest”. My last baby shower was hosted by my DAD. He was hilarious and ended up winning almost every game!
If I win I plan to give this cake to my friend who is pregnant with her 4th little boy!!

  27. Paula in NH on October 5, 2008 at 9:47 am

I was making baby cakes 35 years ago when my first niece was due to be born. Now my son and his wife are expecting their first child.

My best baby shower story was I told my friend I was going to give her live lobsters for her gift. (We lived in MN so live lobsters would be cool). When it came time to open my gift she was instructed to follow a string of yarn that started with a rattle that was hanging over her chair. The yarn led her all over our two-story house and every once in a while there was a small gift. Finally it led her back to her chair. After she sat down I walked into the room with a box that said “Live Lobsters) on it. She nearly died! Inside the box was more small gifts for the baby: first aid items, blankets, lotions, etc. We still talk about her gift to this day.

  28. beth hill on October 4, 2008 at 11:34 pm

I have a friend who is finally adopting after dealing with YEARS of infertility and loss. They’re baby boy is due in Decemeber! What a gift this would be for her.

At one of my showers we played a little game where everyone that attended wore a little decorated safety pin and if they said the word “baby” to someone, that someone could take their pin away. The person with the most pins at the end of the shower won a door prize. It was really cute and noninvasive and didn’t put anyone “on the spot.”

  29. jennifer bowen on October 4, 2008 at 9:32 pm

well at some of the baby showers i had for my self well i had seen to it that every game we played that every one went home with a prize or 2 also we gave out baby shower party bags and well i love to try and win this dipper cake so well i can give it to my friend for a baby gift shes haveing her frist and well i think this would be a grate gift to give to a new mom for her baby thanks

  30. Robin on October 4, 2008 at 8:29 pm

a game give every one a pin and if someone says “baby” or crosses their legs, someone can take their pins, who ever has the most at the end of the party winds a prize.

  31. Rechelle Brown on October 4, 2008 at 5:26 pm

I have to tell you- it never dawned on me when my friend and I kept discussing making a diaper cake for a shower that my husband would literally think baking a cake- we talked at cross purposes for a week about where to get the “ingredients”- he could not understand why we didn’t just hustle down to our little town grocery and be done with it!
lovely cakes and thanks for the chance to win one-

  32. I'm The Mom on October 4, 2008 at 3:30 pm

Oh these are so lovely! I am expecting baby number 6 in Jan and would love to win.
Last year at my sister in laws shower we played the messy diaper game. We melted different chocolate bars into the diapers and people had to try and guess what kind of candy bar it was.

  33. Michelle on October 4, 2008 at 2:42 pm

The one tip I have for baby showers is to have guests pre-address the thank you card envelopes for the hostess so that she doesn’t have to try to track down the addresses after the event.

I love this prize! These cakes are adorable.

  34. Lavern on October 4, 2008 at 1:52 pm

What a great gift this would be. A great fun game is, you write a famous person”s name on a piece of paper and put in a bowl. When someone arrives they draw one paper out of a bowl, they can not look at it but hands it back to the person holding the bowl and they pin it on their back. No one can tell you the name of the person, so when you start playing this game one person at a time can give you a clue to who you, you have to guess who”s name it is and who ever guess the person in the short”s time wins a prize. Really a fun game to play, I was Loretta Swit, but the only name that came to me was ‘Hot Lips’ Houlihan from Mash, need less to say I lost.

  37. AnnMarie on October 4, 2008 at 8:24 am

My SIL’s sister just had a baby and I’d love to send her a gift like this! (Known the family since before I was born sort of thing.) My tip for baby showers is: Don’t forget about families who adopt! They may not wish to have a shower before the baby arrives but a post-baby shower is still delightful. And can be a wonderful break for the new parents, plus an easy way for a bunch of people to see the new baby. Or child–you can have showers for ANY new parent/child.

  38. Marilyn on October 4, 2008 at 7:40 am

A fun game to play a baby showers is Identify the candy. You put a different kind of chocolate candy in several disposable diapers and have the person name the candy. Yo would be surprised how much snickers and baby ruth candy looks smeared in a diaper–not to mention seeing women sticking their noses into a diaper!

  39. Margo on October 3, 2008 at 10:02 pm

I don’t want to enter (for the first time in forever I don’t know anyone in need of a diaper cake), but I just wanted to say that those are really some of the cutest I’ve ever seen!

  40. Lenetta on October 3, 2008 at 9:48 pm

At the last baby shower I hosted, we passed around jars of baby food that people smelled (NOT tasted – eew) to determine what it was. I also had various baby items in paper lunch sacks stapled shut and people had to feel through the sack and guess what it was. Some things were extremely obvious (but a few still missed them) while a couple really had them guessing.

  41. Paige on October 3, 2008 at 8:59 pm

I don’t have a tip or funny story, but I did blog about it and I did a twitter post about it too. Here is the blog link….http://ugagrad1995.blogspot.com/2008/10/how-cute-is-this.html

I don’t know how to post to my twitter post though. Hmmmm………..

  42. Courtney on October 3, 2008 at 8:59 pm

I love those cakes! Thanks for the chance to win!

My favorite non-traditional baby shower game is to pass around a cup of beads and a piece of elastic that everyone adds a bead to the string as they share a wish for the new mother. At the end they have a pretty unique bracelet as a gift for the mom that serves as a reminder so she can always treasure the memories and wishes her friends and family gave her at her shower.

  43. Shelley on October 3, 2008 at 8:33 pm

    What an awesome giveaway.

The “guess what’s in the diaper” game is kind of fun and kind of gross all at the same time.

  44. Soire on October 3, 2008 at 6:49 pm

:O! We’re expecting in december, and that’s an awesome give away!!

My favorite type of baby shower though is one we started doing for all mums, no matter if it was 1st 2nd or 3rd baby. Instead of a gift, you bring a meal that is easy to prepare from frozen! IE: Pan of lasagna, jar of spaghetti sauce+bag of noodles+ garlic bread, home-made soup, etc. so that the family has meals in their freezer that mum and dad don’t have to think about when the newbie comes!

This is always especially appreciated by the mum’s who are having #3 or #4!!

  45. Jenn @ Frugal Upstate on October 3, 2008 at 6:33 pm

OK, I’m not trying to win this-have no need. I just want to say her cakes are adorable! I made one for my SIL’s shower 2 years ago that came out pretty cute. But while I was searching online for directions, I saw some really horrid ugly ones! Becca’s are so much nicer than anything else I saw.

  46. Angela on October 3, 2008 at 5:54 pm

OOOOOh…. that could come in handy:)

  47. Melissa on October 3, 2008 at 5:53 pm

I’d love to win one of these for my step-daughter’s shower! A great thing to do at showers is to bring either a new home-made or store-bought blanket for “The Linus project”. It provides new blankets for lower-income moms.

    Thanks!

  48. Jess on October 3, 2008 at 5:36 pm

My favorite shower gift to give is a diaper pail filled with small gifts tucked into diapers with a note on the outside that says “this is the last nice thing you’ll find in a diaper” It always gets a good laugh 🙂

  49. Mary Jenkins on October 3, 2008 at 5:15 pm

wow! Those are the nicest diaper cakes ever! I have learned the key to giving an exicitng baby shower gift is the presentation. Package your gifts in a creative way. I turned my sister’s gifts into a train for my nephew’s shower!

  50. Amy on October 3, 2008 at 4:39 pm

I just attended a baby shower for me last night and thought they had the cutest idea for a “guest book” – they had a plain 6 month white onesie and markers for everyone to sign it! The wrote “This Baby is Loved By…” and then all the signatures – how cute 🙂

  51. Rachel Crisman on October 3, 2008 at 4:02 pm

When I had my bay shower at a friends house, their air conitioner broke and it was over 100 degrees outside.I had my husband faning me and in all my pictures I was bright red in the face.
I would love to win a diaper cake for my friend ho is finally having a little girl! The first female born on the husbands side of the family for many years.

  52. Billie on October 3, 2008 at 3:43 pm

We played a fun game at my sisters shower – the teams of 3 or 4 had to carve a baby out of a bar of soap using a butter knife.. lots of fun but a little messy…

  53. themomhalf on October 3, 2008 at 3:25 pm

oh this would be perfect for a friend i have to buy a baby shower gift for! — perfect timing 🙂

  54. Diane on October 3, 2008 at 3:04 pm

I have a large group of friends, so we have lot’s of baby showers! One of my favorites was a group shower with a basket for gifts for each mom. We also included a basket for a local non-profit that helps new moms. It was so much fun, and easy to bring one extra thing to help someone out.

  55. Heather on October 3, 2008 at 2:52 pm

One of the funniest games I have ever played at a baby shower was making a guest into a baby with only toilet paper and tape to use as supplies. We broke into teams with 3 people in each team. It was absolutely classic. Great fun. Highly recommended.

  56. Christina Dodson on October 3, 2008 at 2:46 pm

I’ve heard of diaper cakes before and actually have seen a few others, but these are simply adorable! WOW! I will post a comment on my blog about this contest for you, although my site doesn’t receive a lot of traffic right now (the blog portion, that is) because it’s brand new.

Here’s a game that’s fun to play at baby showers. It’s common in our area, and you may have heard of it as well, but I thought I’d mention it anyway. It’s a relay.

Have 2 teams totally UNdress and REdress two life-size baby dolls from diaper to sweater and blanket. It’s a hoot!

  57. Kara on October 3, 2008 at 2:46 pm

I would love to win this! My little sister just found out she’s pg and I know I’ll probably be in charge of her baby shower and was thinking that I’d love to have a diaper cake for it 😀

My tip for baby showers- people don’t like that little game where you have to taste the baby food and guess what it is 😛

  58. Paul Nicholson on October 3, 2008 at 2:33 pm

    Yes please.
