About

Home-Ec101.com is a site designed to teach real skills as they apply to real lives. Few people have the resources to keep up with glossy magazines, and the reality of television is that it isn’t. Home-Ec 101 attempts to reach average people and teach them the domestic arts that make life a little less expensive, easier, and more enjoyable.

Life skills are missing from most modern curricula. Students are expected to step out of the classroom into busy, consumer-driven lifestyles. There are no tutorials, and there are no do-overs. Home Ec 101 was created to fill the gap; the site is a resource for the rising generations who haven’t learned basic life skills from their busy, working parents.

If you have a question, there is a chance it may have already been answered. Use the search box at the very top of the site. If you can’t find your answer, please submit your questions via email to helpme@home-ec101.com.

Be respectful of others when commenting. If you need further clarification, please check out the commenting policy. To be very clear, Home-Ec101 is an inclusive, anti-racist community. Yes, we talk about homemaking, and many of us are female, but please don’t assume we do so out of a compulsion to observe “traditional” values.

The founder of the site is Heather Solos. She is a Director at FeedBlitz and runs Home-Ec101 in her spare time.

She is the mother of two boys, three girls, a stepson, and a stepdaughter. Heather was a professional chef in her former life but left the restaurant industry in 2003 during a complicated pregnancy.

Heather Solos began blogging as a means to stay in contact with long-distance friends and family. Initially a life blogger, she soon found a vibrant community in the Lowcountry of South Carolina.

After blogging for the Post and Courier, she co-founded Lowcountry Bloggers, a site dedicated to creating connections within a geographic community of bloggers. Even if it looks like she has it together, Heather strives to be honest about the frustrations, headaches, and joy found in everyday living. Heather Solos is available to speak and encourages people to find a balance between modern life expectations and the reality of scrubbing the toilet.

The founder of Home-Ec 101 doesn’t profess to know everything. Still, the knowledgeable and wonderful Home-Ec 101 community and contributing authors are always happy to chime in and help with their experience.

Home-Ec 101 was originally founded as a partnership between Heather Solos and Ivy Hogan.

Home-Ec101 does not sell links but will accept cookbooks and products for review. Please see the contact page for details. Also note that all the reviews are candid and forthright. Home-Ec 101 is not owned by any company- any product recommendations come from personal use and preference. This site does not have the budget or time to perform intensive product testing but bases conclusions on its use in a single, busy household.

Home Ec 101 is a labor of love — enjoy!

  1. You have a note on the front page asking where the increased traffic is from. Your site was listed in “Neat New Stuff May 4, 2007”. That is where I found out about your site and many librarians receive this listing so that could explain increased traffic.

You can subscribe to the list at:

  2. I love ….love….love your site! I found it thru Momadvice.com It doesn’t surprise me that you are from the south…your humor and hospitality are wonderful. My husband and I discovered Edisto Island a couple of years ago and have vacationed there for a couple of years in the “off” season. We loved the quiet beauty of the people and the island. We always spend a couple of days in Charleston, Beaufort and Savannah. I was in broadcasting for 27 years before “retiring” to be a full time wife and “Nana” to our two precious grandkids. I wrote a book last year called “Creating Happy Memories”….please check it out on Amazon.com We have given the profits to our local Homeless Center for their children’s programs because we met while volunteering there. It helps families create wonderful memories and traditions for little or no money. God Bless, Pam

  3. I love your site… I stumbled across it while looking for how to clean pillows. I love reading articles and getting inspired to clean, because I'm not a 'Betty' yet, but I'm on my way. Fiona from Western Australia :o)

  4. Love the site!
I will admit, I'm a young woman who found that I had never been taught the home-ec skills I need, and I was ecstatic to find your site. It has been surprisingly useful, and I probably just made the most successful pi-day pie I have ever created, thanks to your caramel apple pie recipe!
    thanks!
