I shut off the hot water valve completely on the washing machine. Got tired of reminding the family over and over. I just turn it on when I need to do a hot water wash cycle (rarely), then shut it off again.

I like the idea. Thanks for sharing.

As a sidebar, it is a good idea to rotate all such valves at least quarterly (every 4 months) to keep them free of mineral deposits that may make them inoperable when needed.

I NEVER thought of this before. I am so going to do this in the kitchen and the kids' bathrooms. My sons like to use about a gallon of water to rinse off their plate before putting it in the dishwasher...and five gallons to brush their teeth.
