Tis The Season To Clean Your Car Out

I ain’t gonna lie, kids. My car would easily win the Home-Ec 101 Seal Of Disapproval at any given time.  I have three kids and spend a lot of time on the go. Well, a poor excuse is better than none, as my grandma always said.

Twice a year, however, it’s all shiny and spotless. That’s how my car is right now, because I like to clean out and detail my car before it gets really cold.  Nobody wants to wash car windows in 32 degree weather, so I get it done before  it gets really cold, and then I clean it again when it starts getting warm again.

To keep the mess load down in my car, I keep a plastic grocery bag attached to the gearshift. That way the trash never really builds up terribly badly. I also keep a file folder in the car, so if I check the mail when I’m leaving the house, I can easily file the mail that needs attention. If I’m looking for the electric bill, I can usually find it in the car.

When I do the twice-yearly major cleanout, I bring a white trash bag for clothing, toys, and other items that need to go inside and a black trash bag for any trash that has escaped the plastic gearshift bag. Once it’s completely cleaned out, I vacuum the car thoroughly. Don’t forget to vacuum the dashboard, trunk, and gearshift. You’d be surprised at how much dust collects in these areas!

Then I wash and wax the outside of the vehicle. Washing the exterior before washing the interior windows helps you make sure you’re not leaving streaks on the inside windows. Then wash the interior windows and  you’re done! Spotless car.

Smelling like smoke?

April 18th, 2007 2 Comments

Dear Home Ec 101:

Have you any idea how to get the smell of smoke and sweat out of car upholstery without making the entire vehicle reek of Febreze? Too much Febreze gives me a massive headache, although I’d almost prefer that over the reek of man sweat in my new (to me) car.

Something tells me you’re a newly converted non-smoker, congratulations! Three things will help rid your car of its stank. The best part is none of these methods will be covering up the problem with a chemical odor.

1) Shampoo the carpet and upholstery. You can typically rent a RugDoctor type machine from most supermarkets and hardware stores. I would do this on a day where it’s unlikely to rain. The windows should be left down for at least a few hours to allow the carpets to dry and avoid any potential for a mildew.

2) Place a bowl of vinegar in the car over night. Vinegar is great at removing problem odors, although I might recommend driving with the windows cracked so you don’t arrive at work smelling like you’ve been dyeing Easter eggs.

3 ) Leave the windows down as often as possible. Fresh air is will help dissipate any lingering odors.

Enjoy your new (to you) car!
