Poll: What should we do with our aggregator?

May 6th, 2008 by Badbadivy

Ivy says:

Heather and I have been talking about the aggregator. We’re quite undecided about whether or not it adds value to the site. As you know, we hate clutter here at Home Ec 101, so if our readers don’t think it’s a useful addition to the site, we might get rid of it.

However, our readers could find it to be a great resource. People who are on the aggregator may find they get some traffic from it. We’re not sure, and that’s why we’re opening it up to you guys. Please take the poll and leave us a comment about what you think!

  • I’d rather see a blogroll. You can fit a lot more great links in a lot less space.

  • I read your blog on Bloglines, so I didn’t even know what the Aggregator was until I came over here specifically to peek at it. I wouldn’t miss it if it were gone.

  • I read the RSS feed so I don’t see the aggregator. I like vigilant20’s idea of a blogroll or something else that would take up less space.

Design note: the serif font is difficult to read at that font size (FireFox).

  • I also read you on bloglines and I get the full post there so I’m not often on your actual site. Now that I know you have one, I might scan it when I’m already at the site but I won’t make a special trip just to check it out.

  • what’s an aggregator? :)

  • Would rather see a link to tips of the day type items.

  • I generally read on bloglines as well so I didn’t vote as up until today had no idea that you had such a thing. But when I looked at it I found it overwhelming and personally would prefer a blogroll that I could dig through when I felt so inclined!

  • Add my name to the ‘you had an aggregator?’ list. I read via RSS too.

A blogroll seems like a better idea, maybe you can do a link of the week thing where you highlight a blog or post that you think people would like then the RSS readers will see it too.

  • WHAT IS AN AGGREGATOR????

Please explain what it is so your readers can make an educated vote.

    WHAT IS AN AGGREGAROR??

  • I’m with Rhonda & Moi. What’s an aggregator???

  • If you look over to the right hand column, under the title aggregator, you will see our automated feed of over 50 frugal and DIY blogs. It allows readers to see what’s happening in the frugal community at a glance.

  • I “sort of” like the Aggregator.

    The good-

list of other interesting things to check out, and what is there to read. (better than just a blogroll).

    The bad –

The font is lousy and hard to read (Firefox)

    Would prefer

Rather than an automated list, I would rather see a list of things you happen to see recently that you think is worth reading.

(one simple way of doing this is through Google Reader, where you click “Share” on stories you think are worth sharing, and have a widget that allows you to show them on your blog)

Just my couple of copper pennies.

  • Although it does take up space, I have found some good blogs/posts from it and I’m glad you have it. I can read just a little snippit of something to see if I’m interested. I like it.

  • I get this blog via FeedBlitz, but then I click through to read it. So I don’t see the aggregator until I get here. And truthfully, I prefer it over the typical blogroll because I get a preview of recently updated posts. That way I can see in a snapshot if there is something else I’m interested in reading, rather than just randomly clicking on blog titles in a blog roll. In fact, I’m wondering how I can get an aggregator over at my blog The Lean Green Family.
