No-Salt Taco Seasoning

This no-salt taco seasoning recipe is a great way to keep your salt intake under control without sacrificing flavor. It takes all of three minutes to put together – five if you’re the picture taking type- and it makes enough for about four recipes calling for a taco mix. Use 2.5 tablespoons of the taco seasoning mix wherever a packet of taco seasoning is suggested.

Keep in mind, when using this as a one-to-one substitution for a packet of taco seasoning that the recipe likely expects there to be quite a lot of salt in the seasoning mix (a little more than 1 tsp for every 2.5 TBSP of mix). You will likely need to add some salt, but you have much finer control and probably won’t wake up in the middle of the night and stick your head under the faucet trying to guzzle ALL. THE. WATER.  Oh, I’m sure you’re much too fancy and would grab a glass even in the middle of the night, so forget I said anything.

Double, triple, quadruple, whatever you’d like.

Measure and mix.

Store in a tightly sealed container.

I don’t measure carefully, I use rounded spoons rather than carefully leveled.

Variation:

You may, if you’d like add 1 TBSP & 1 tsp ground black pepper, but I prefer to just use fresh ground pepper in whatever the final dish may be

  1. Yes, awesome! I’m all about avoiding salty pre-packaged foods — not to be salt-free, but so I can control it and use the kind of salt I prefer as well. This is great, thanks.

Oh, one note: SOME chili powders do contain salt, so check the ingredients. I was startled to learn this back when I became a label reader. Yes, actually startled. And a little miffed.

  2. Thanks. I usually just wing it on the taco seasoning, but it’s nice to have a recipe to go by. This is pretty much what I would use, but the proportions would be less precise. I’m going to make this RIGHT NOW and tonight is kind of one of those nights for the homemade HH, too, so I’ll probably use it tonight, too. I like this “back to basics” theme you are working on. I’ve learned a lot over the past several years, in large part thanks to you, especially in the first couple of years, but there are a few basics I don’t really make or don’t know how to make well. Pork chops and homemade HH are two of them.

  3. I made this mix and have used it twice… It is delicious! I used ground turkey and made a taco salad. I bought the taco shell bowl molds off tv and they are amazingly fast and easy to use. The next meal I used the mix as a dry rub on thin chicken cutlets and quick sautéed them in a little olive oil. I sliced the chicken in strips, added sautéed onions and green peppers and made fajitas with soft taco shells. This mix is awesome and is now a staple in my spice cabinet. Thanks, Home-Ec -101!

    • Thank you! I’m so glad you like it. I really like your fajita idea, too.

My friend Bran and I were talking about those taco shell molds last night, over margaritas, naturally. His spouse is a huge taco salad fan, so it was definitely worth the investment for them.

  4. I did end up making this and I’ve used it several times. I like having big batches of multi-use spice combos. My favorite is the Cajun spice at our local health food grocery store, but I don’t make it over there often since it’s not that local. This is another good one like that. You also told me about Old Bay a long time ago and I found it and have used that on and off. I’m sorry it has been a hard month, now. I’ll pray for you some more. 🙂 We’ve had a stressful few weeks, too, and I’m ready for some smooth, restful days.
