No, really. Read the directions.

Ivy says:

I probably should have saved this for Heather’s confessional, but I have so many things to confess, I’ll just go ahead and post this one here. Besides, this one comes with a life lesson!

I was making brownies for the family, from scratch. I was in a hurry, though, and I read the directions very quickly while I was getting everything out. While I was mixing everything together, I thought something seemed odd. A half cup of salt? That’s an awful lot, I thought. Then I internally shrugged and dumped the half cup of salt in. And I failed to notice that I had put an awful lot of salt in and NO SUGAR.

When I tasted the brownie mix before putting it in the oven, I realized my error. Worst brownie mix EVER. I had misread salt for sugar and had somehow skipped over the actual salt in the recipe entirely. So, let my massive screwup be a lesson to you: Always, always, always, read the directions thoroughly. And if something seems odd, stop and look at the recipe. Salty brownies are a bad, bad thing.

i’ve done that before, except it was the frosting and not the brownies. the frosting used honey & powdered sugar, and for some reason i thought that the honey was the only sweet that went into the frosting. those were some very bitter-sweet brownies, but if you’re into dark chocolate they weren’t so bad.

I did this with so many things when I was learning how to cook I think my mother must have wondered about me. I made chocolate chip cookies & neglected to put in the flour. The FLOUR! I mean, it’s the main ingredient in nearly all baked goods. The oven was a mess. Even as an experienced cook now, I tend to read over things very carelfully. And with the recipes I’ve committed to memory, I try to work in an organized fashion as well. Or else one really tired morning, I may just have another pancake fiasco…!!!

My son was making a cake mix once and forgot the mix. He just put in the wet ingredients and mixed them and baked them as the directions said. That was the worse stink I have ever smelt. Can’t say how it tasted. Couldn’t get past the smell.

My mom once put a cup of rum each in the strawberry daquiris instead of an ounce becaue she read it wrong!
