    I pick, U-Pick!

by Heather on April 21, 2007

    Heather says:

In South Carolina strawberry season is peaking. I like to take advantage of this by taking a trip out to our local U-Pick farm. Not only do I support local farmers and do my part for the environment, as local produce has less of a carbon footprint, I also get to enjoy some of the best tasting produce I’ve ever laid my eyes on.

I buy in bulk and preserve with canning and freezing. As an added bonus, the U-Pick experience is a treat for the kids while being educational. I feel it is important to learn where food comes from and that it doesn’t magically arrive on their plates. Our favorite farm grows their produce organically, so there’s no worry when “sampling.”

I love strawberries. I have them in my garden. They should be ripe for picking in a few weeks.

Oooo, you’ve GOT to include some EASY preserves recipe! I love fresh strawberry preserves, but it’s such a pain in the rump to make that I don’t bother…I’m really terrified of biting off more than I can chew w/preserves. I’m afraid I’ll ROYALLY mess it up!

We took our son strawberry picking when he was only 3 years old. He freaked when the strawberry juice leaked on his little toes! Now that he’s 15 yrs old my husband and I never tire of telling that story.
I would love read your post on canning so I’ve bookmarked your blog. Oh, I found you thru The Moms Blog.
