Folding laundry is a giant pain in the rear, but it’s something that everyone (except those that pay for laundry service) has to do. I’ve taught all three of my children (currently 9, 7, and 5) how to quickly fold a t-shirt. If they can manage this simple shirt folding technique, you can, too.

One of the awesome (or heinous) truths of this how to, is that you’ll probably never run out of chances to practice quickly folding your shirts. And, if you’re a little OCD like me and feel guilty for unfolding a shirt when out shopping, you can quickly fix the mess you made while checking to see if the shirt was long enough.

I always get nervous when demonstrating anything, even something as simple as folding a shirt. One of my co-workers at the pub likes to hover over my shoulder when I’m trying to ring in an order just to aggravate me.  You’ll get it down in no time, generally each shirt only takes a few seconds once you understand the technique.

Oh and notice, the kids are 9, 7, and 5? That explains the shrieking in the background. They were told to go upstairs for all of 40 seconds. . . Sigh.

Is this how you fold your t-shirts?

    • Thanks! I’m trying to get over myself and do more video, even if it means posting things that are a little shaky.

I’m trying to remember that perfection is the enemy of the good. There are so many things I haven’t posted here that are good and useful because I thought I couldn’t demonstrate or explain them well enough. I’m trying to put a stop to that and just get over myself and do it.

      • Yes, seriously awesome. I love your tips. If you hadn’t pointed out that you were nervous, I don’t think I’d have seen it. I was too busy being mesmerized by the way you fold the shirt. It looks like magic.

      • Well hang in there because I thought it was really great, & I’m sure everyone else will too!

I always HATED seeing myself on video, to the point where I flat-out refused to be in any of our home videos when my kids were babies. (How sad is that?) Then one day I randomly took my flip camera along to the grocery store for a coupon shopping trip and my readers went crazy for it so I started doing it more, even though I felt like a complete dork! Several months later I was asked to do an interview on the local news, which ended up leading to a regular gig as the “WINK News Money Saving Expert.” Now I am on a few times month, which would’ve NEVER happened had I not done my silly shopping videos found a way to get comfortable with the camera.

  1. You really do make this look like magic, and I don’t think I understood, but I usually hang almost all of our shirts (and roll them when we travel) so don’t worry, I don’t need to very badly. I think I more just watched it to pamper my vanity and see if I folded them the way you do, when I need to fold them.

  2. Brilliant! I am seriously impressed. We hang our shirts, mostly because it takes too long to fold them. But, the kids’ shirts are folded, so I will practice. Thanks.

  3. When I first read the post title, I thought this would be a tutorial on how to fold a t-shirt in the same messy fashion that I normally use. But this is Brilliant! And perfect. Seriously. And now I may actually fold my t-shirts instead of hanging them 🙂

    And your video rocks 🙂

  4. I’ve actually seen this before and forgotten all about it. Thanks for the reminder! We fold lots of tees, the slow and sloppy old-fashioned way, in this house due to lack of closet space. And for some reason, my DH insists on folding his tees when we fold laundry downstairs (while watching tv after kids go to bed as our 1 year old undoes any folding). Anyway, he hangs his tees in his closet as that is all he wears, but wants them folded anyway. Very aggravating because he usually hangs his clothes within 24 hours of doing laundry, but he won’t just lay the tees out flat and carry them upstairs that way. But I don’t complain since he does most of the laundry, he folds laundry and he puts it away. I think I’d rather have all that and just be slightly annoyed with the insistence of folding it beforehand. However, I do keep my tees and my kids tees in drawers since there are no extra closet space for that stuff.

Oh and I thought your video was great!!!

  5. I love your blog, I read it often, and refer other people to it when they are trying to figure out a household question. When I run into a “how should I do that?” question you are my first source! Thank you for all your posts, I often find better ways to do things I thought I already knew how to do (like folding t-shirts).
