Cheap and easy: Rice Sock

by Heather on August 14, 2007

Heather says:

The next time a cotton sock goes missing, take its clean mate and fill it with uncooked rice, be sure to leave some room for the grains to move.  Tie or stitch the end closed.  You now have a a great hot or cold compress.

To use microwave for 1 minute, check for any super hot spots and apply to the ailing body part.

Alternately, it can be placed in the freezer for an hour before use.

I find these are a lifesaver for sore muscles or tension headaches.

I've done this for YEARS. I have frequent neck spasms, so I had an old tube sock filled with rice that I brought into work (back when I was working). After a year or so of use, the sock looked a little brown, but it was from the heat in the microwave, not dirt. But once I put in the office microwave and then got distracted and forgot about it until I heard someone say:

"ewwww! Someone put a sock in the microwave!".

;)

Add a bit of fragrance (like lavender), and you've made your very own spa wrap. :) I have a spray bottle that holds a mixture of lavender oil and water, and I spritz the wrap before it goes into the microwave. The moisture helps keep the rice from scorching too.
