Beauty By Ivy: 5 best beauty bargains

by Badbadivy on May 17, 2007

    WinkIvy says:

Yesterday I wrote about things that were expensive, but worth the bucks. These 5 items are cheap, but super fab. On with the show:

    1. E.L.F Clear Mascara. I love clear mascara, but it is typically fairly expensive. Not so with the E.L.F. stuff. It’s a DOLLAR, YO! Now, you might be thinking “You get what you pay for”, but in this case, it’s not so. This stuff is great.

    2. Everyday Minerals Free Sample Kit. Everyday Minerals is a mineral foundation like Bare Escentuals, but (in my experience) a better quality and much, much cheaper. Like I said yesterday, I like my tinted moisturizer from BeneFit, but sometimes more coverage is desired. This is when I go for my Everyday Minerals. This sample kit is extremely generous, and is the best beauty bargain I know of. You do have to pay something like 5 or 6 bucks shipping, but it is completely worth it. AND they take PayPal!

    3. Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque. Great for blackheads and with that nifty minty smell, the Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque is the best thing since sliced bread. It’s about 3 bucks at Sally Beauty Supply. (No, you don’t need a card to shop there. But I did pay 5 bucks to get their discount card, which has saved me hordes of money, since Sally is my fave place to shop other than Sephora)

    4. NYX Eyeshadow, any shade. Remember my love for MAC eyeshadows? Yeah, I nearly love these as much, but these are only 5 bucks. Great colors, wonderful texture, I cannot say enough for NYX eyeshadow.

    5. Rimmel Volume Boost Liquid Lipcolor. You like plumping lipgloss? So do I. The Rimmel stuff is pretty good. Some plumping lipglosses are PAINFUL but Rimmel’s is not, just a nifty little tingle. The colors are great (pay no attention to what I have linked. Go to the drugstore and see them for yourself) and it has decent staying power.

OK, now that I’ve shared my secrets, let’s hear yours? What are your best beauty bargains?

I swear by witch hazel. And Avon nailpolish!

Thanks for the info on the mineral makeup- I love the stuff but pay like 50 bucks a jar. I ordered my free samples.

Equate baby wash from Wal-mart removes eye makeup quickly and doesn’t hurt your eyes. It’s gentle enough to use everyday to cleanse your face. Last time I bought it was 1.28 for a full size bottle.

Covergirl has these lipsticks that are guaranteed to look good with 97% of all skin tones. I paid nearly $5 last time, but the color is perfect.

LA Looks is made by the same company that makes Giovanni haircare. Try the gel for a 1.50 and see if it works for you. Works great for my naturally curly hair.

And my biggest find: Chandrika Soaps. They retail for 1.00 a bar, are completely vegan, and smell like sandalwood and patchouli. I get mine at the Indian market, but you could probably find them at a healthfood store (though not as cheaply)

I’ve wanted to try that everyday minerals stuff, Ivy, but will it break me out??? Is it free of strange oils and fragrances?

    Margo May 18, 2007 at 7:13 am

OK, I just took a look, and it’s apparently free of the wierd ingredients. I’m going to try it.

I second the E.L.F. reccomendation. With the exception of their eyeshadow, which is difficult to use and creasy, everything else I have used by them is fabulous, especially their lip-glosses. And ONE DOLLAR. THAT IS ALL!

When I went to NY on a trip, I stopped into a dollar store and was delighted to find a whole wall of e.l.f. cosmetics. I picked up an eyelash curler (yup, they also sell “tools”) for a buck, and it’s been the best “beauty” purchase I’ve made in a while!

In NYC the best place to shop for beauty stuff is Ricky’s. http://www.rickys-nyc.com/ There’s a couple locations throughout the city.

What exactly does clear mascara do for one? Just make your lashes shiny? Just wondering… I have super long lashes and if I wear mascara that extends them they scrape at my glasses, so I’m always looking for volumizing or other solutions…

I just ordered my mineral samples. I’ll let you know how I feel they compare to bare essentials that I use now. the shipping on the free samples was just $3.97 for me. Thanks.

Just thought that I’d put this little nugget out there. I have VERY sensitive skin and can ONLY use certain face creams, cleansers, masks, etc. The BEST BUY I’ve found for these EXPENSIVE items is TJMaxx, Ross’s, and Marshalls. They carry Elizabeth Arden!!! I just bought a Hydrating Mask the other day for $5!!! It’s wonderful!

The Burt’s Bees new tinted lip balms. OOOOHHH they feel and smell great and add color at the same time! (((((HUGS))))) sandi
